Doha, Qatar

Introduction

 

Doha is the capital city and most populous city of the State of Qatar. Doha has a population of 1,351,000 in a city proper with the population close to 1.5 million. The city is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country.

 

History

 

The city of Doha was formed after seceding from another local settlement known as Al Bidda. The earliest documented mention of Al Bidda was made in 1681, by the Carmelite Convent, in an account which chronicles several settlements in Qatar. Doha was founded in the vicinity of Al Bidda sometime during the 1820s. In January 1823, political resident John MacLeod visited Al Bidda to meet with the ruler and initial founder of Doha, Buhur bin Jubrun, who was also the chief of the Al Buainain tribe. Qatar officially declared its independence in 1971, with Doha as its capital city. In 1973, the University of Qatar was opened by emiri decree, and in 1975 the Qatar National Museum opened in what was originally the ruler’s palace.

 

Economy

 

Doha is the economic centre of Qatar. The city is the headquarters of numerous domestic and international organizations, including the country’s largest oil and gas companies, Qatar Petroleum, and Qatargas. Doha’s economy is built primarily on the revenue the country has made from its oil and natural gas industries. Thirty-nine new hotels were under construction in 2011. Doha was included in Fortune’s 15 best new cities for business in 2011.

 

Places to visit

 

Msheireb Enrichment Centre is a floating barge docked at the Doha Corniche, in close proximity to one of the city’s oldest landmarks, the Sheraton Hotel.

Museum of Orientalists. The Orientalist Collection of the State of Qatar is one of the most significant collections ever assembled in the world. The approximate 700 hundred paintings, water colours, drawings and prints, acquired over the last twenty years, trace Orientalism back to the early 18th century.

 

Places to visit

 

Katara Cultural Village. Located in West Bay Area. a huge Cultural City which host a roman style public auditorium, Museums, Galleries, Libraries and many more cultural attraction.

Doha Zoo located near the Sports City complex, the Doha Zoo features a variety of animals, including the Oryx, Qatar’s national animal.

Jungle Zone offers 3500 sq m of animal-themed children’s attractions. Qatar’s most popular indoor theme park located at Hyatt Plaza, near Khalifa Stadium in the booming city of Doha.
